November 21 2023 – EU: CDR AOK

One year ago, on this day, November 21st, 2023 the European Union basically said, “Yeah, carbon dioxide removals are a fun thing. And we can add them into the whole carbon trading model, because you know, how else are we going to hit our entirely fictitious targets while still growing the economy?”

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was roughly 423ppm. As of 2024 it is 423ppm, but check here for daily measures. 

The context was that there was an ongoing push – see this from the year before –

What I think we can learn from this. The EU is not gonna save us. No-one and nothing is gonna save us.

November 17, 2023 – two degrees warmer, for the first time…

One year ago, on this day, November 17th, 2023, the globe was, according to one data set, two degrees warmer than pre-industrial levels for the first time in human history.

We now have results from a modern reanalysis product (ERA5) that shows November 17th was in fact the first day the world has experienced that was 2C above the preindustrial (1850-1900) average. 

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was roughly 423ppm. As of 2024 it is 423ppm, but check here for daily measures. 

A year ago today, we broke two degrees for the first time. 

At time of writing (or narrating) this in December 2023 it looks like a pretty sure bet that those temperature records will fall again, because we have an El Nino year on the way, and our emissions are higher. And we are about to get seriously smacked between the eyes. As Matt Damon, as Jason Bourne, said to the journalist at Waterloo, “you have no idea what you’re into”.

And as of November 2024 – yeah,the El Nino ended but the tempatures did not come down as some expected. Have a look at this

July 3,2003 and 2023 – it’s getting warmer. And warmer.

In an astonishing announcement on global warming and extreme weather, the World Meteorological Organisation signalled last night that the world’s weather is going haywire.

In a startling report, the WMO, which normally produces detailed scientific reports and staid statistics at the year’s end, highlighted record extremes in weather and climate occurring all over the world in recent weeks, from Switzerland’s hottest-ever June to a record month for tornadoes in the United States – and linked them to climate change.

Remember this date. Decades in the future we will look back on 17C with fondness

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was roughly 376ppm (2003) and 421 (2023). As of 2024 it is 426ppm, but check here for daily measures. 

The context was that scientists have been saying it was getting warmer for 100 years. They’ve been saying that carbon dioxide was probably the cause since 1953 (earlier if you count Guy Callendar). They were saying that weather records would fall. And guess what? Temperature records did fall 20 years apart in the UK. 

What we learn from this is what we learn from history;  “the only thing we learn is that we learn nothing from history.” 

What happened next? The emissions kept climbing. The atmospheric concentrations kept climbing. The temperatures will keep climbing this year 2024 And by the way, I’m narrating in December 2023. It will be warmer still because of El Nino. And it really does look terminal for our species. Happy Days in the Samuel Beckett sense.

January 10, 2023 Labour launches a Climate and Environment Forum

One year ago, on this day, January 10, 2023,

The Labour Climate and Environment Forum (LCEF) launched on Tuesday [2023 01 10] in parliament and is now signing up MPs. The group argues “that tackling the climate and environment emergency is an issue of social justice and economic prosperity that should sit comfortably at the heart of the movement as a core Labour value.”

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was roughly 419.5ppm. As of 2024 it is 422 ppm, but check here for daily measures. 

The context? They say opposition is easy. All you have to do is denounce the complacency, incompetence and greed of the government (and governments are all always, especially after a couple of terms complacent, greedy, and incompetent). But actually, things like this Labour Climate and Environment Forum present a headache for Keir Starmer, who needs to stop voters bleeding away to the left, while also holding on to that mythical beast, middle England. And so this presents a series of presentational challenges.

He doesn’t have control over what bodies do and do not get set up. At least not yet. So the activists keep trying to raise Starmer’s ambition, but Starmer is trying to play a dead head sorry, dead bat to everything. How this all plays out during an election campaign in the immediate aftermath remains to be seen. 

Meanwhile Starmer is flying kites about watering down the 28 billion a year pledge (managing expectations?).

What happened next? Well watch the space. No new publications from the LCEF since October, despite COP28 and so forth. Are they all busy waiting for the May 2024 election? Or have the thumbscrews been applied?
