“Closure of the Strait of Hormuz may trigger a bioinvasion super‑spreader event”  IMO, we may be toast

Tl;dr: academic article about the microbial swingers’ event in the Strait of Hormuz is terrifying stuff.

There’s an Open Access academic article, only 8 pages long, published two weeks, about what happens when all those ships, currently stuck by the Strait of Hormuz closure, get out and about, with new bugs. Fun times. (I came to it via this important read by Charlie Angus)

I remember, in 1991 I think, reading people warning about how the fires set off by Saddam Hussein in his retreat from Kuwait might interrupt the monsoon rains in India that were crucial for feeding a billion people.  It didn’t happen, but that doesn’t mean those warning about it were wrong (they never said it would definitely happen) and were irresponsible for raising the possibility. 

Before this, I was trying to read diligently from both “left” (The Nation, the Village Voice) and the “right” (National Review etc). The latter really kept returning – again and again (this was the era when environmental regulation on climate might be coming) – to Paul Ehrlich’s “mass famine is INEVITABLE by the end of the 1970s” warnings.

Ehrlich, who died recently, spent decades trying – with limited success –  to row back from what he said, to parse those warnings and claim that they were warnings of what COULD happen. He was by no means the most vehement “we’re all going to die soon”-er, but he was the most prominent, and the damage to his credibility was significant.

So, warnings have to be nuanced, but nuance is not what the algorithms which rule us demand.  A dilemma, a kind of cognitive bottleneck.


Which brings us to the Strait of Hormuz

I did not know of the journal “Biol Invasions” – aka Biological Invasions. But why would I? Anyway, it’s unlikely to appear as the guest trade publication on “Have I Got News For You?” because it would definitely harsh everybody’s Friday night jocular vibe.

Anyway, below are some highlights. You could read the whole thing in half an hour, and have nightmares that went on for days.

In the modern history of ship lay-ups (vessels remaining at anchor or dockside for an extended period of time), the number of ships that have been trapped due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is unparalleled. More than 1500 large commercial ships remained idle in the Persian/Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, hereafter referred to collectively as the “Gulf region”, starting on February 28, 2026 (e.g., World Bank 2026). These vessels have arrived with biofouling organisms from a wide range of source regions and are now acquiring (and will likely depart with) extensive biofouling communities of microbes, algae, and invertebrates from the Gulf region. This massive intermingling of ships and biofouling will result in the inevitable release of non-indigenous species (NIS) at the lay-up sites and in the spread of marine species across the globe once the idle ships resume their trade routes. 

Apparently ten days is all it would take, and we are way past Ten Days That Shook the World.

The underlying inevitability of impending species translocations is based on the typical sigmoidal (s-shaped) curve that characterizes biofouling accumulation on submerged surfaces (Daly et al. 2025). Biofouling on static surfaces can reach the rapid growth phase after 10 days (e.g., Davidson et al. 2020), which is longer than typical residence times of less than 2 days for cargo vessels in most ports. When ships are idle beyond these time frames, biofouling develops aggressively as antifouling coatings become compromised from lack of movement (e.g., Casse and Swain 2006). (emphasis added)

There are various reasons why you might get a bunch of ships at anchor in one place – festivals, mothballed military etc etc.  And we’ve known about the problem for yonks.

And here come the niches, doing their niche things…

Although a variety of vessel types and sizes operate in this region, the routine presence of a considerable number of very large ships (with correspondingly extensive submerged hull surfaces and niche areas vulnerable to biofouling) from around the world amplifies their exposure to diverse biofouling communities. 

Turns out the whole damn thing is a Thunder Dome for the survival of the shittiest, a Hegsethian Petri Dish.

The Persian/Arabian Gulf is a semi enclosed sea with an average depth of 35 m, characterized by high salinity and temperature, limited water exchange, and strong evaporation (Joydas et al. 2024). Summer surface-water temperatures can reach approximately 38 °C, and winter temperatures range between 15 and 20 °C (Alosairi et al. 2011), with salinities often exceeding 40 psu (Kashkooli et al. 2022). Recent data also revealed a significant increase in the spatial and temporal extent and average number of marine heat waves in this region (Paradan et al. 2025). Extreme environmental pressures, combined with coastal industrialization and urbanization, have also directly reduced biodiversity in Gulf ecosystems (Naser 2014). These conditions are relevant to biosecurity risk because the remaining stress-tolerant taxa are more likely to survive transport, persist during vessel lay-up, and establish in recipient regions with similar or stressful environmental conditions. 

Here’s a couple of maps.

It doesn’t get lighter or brighter.

“Ship biofouling also poses hidden risks. Many biofouling species are globally distributed and adapted to diverse environmental conditions (e.g., Viard and Tepolt 2025). Introducing new genetic diversity into established non-indigenous populations can promote genetic introgression, accelerating adaptation, and increasing their ability to spread and persist across a wider range of conditions (Touchard et al. 2023). In particular, the warm waters of the Gulf region are likely to select for heat-tolerant genotypes, which, if introduced to thermally-limited populations, may give them a greater adaptive buffer against future warming (Griffiths et al. 2021). “

Oh crap

Stressed ecosystems, such as industrial ports, are highly vulnerable to bioinvasion because environmental disturbances reduce community resistance (e.g., Stachowicz et al. 1999). By suppressing native species, opening up ecological niches, and increas ing resource availability, disturbances allow invasive, fast-growing opportunist (e.g., tolerant and resilient) species to establish themselves; the added influence of high resource availability may further promote invasibility (Crooks et al. 2011). In the Gulf region, invasibility is paired with massive shipping volume, providing ample opportunity for the development of NIS assemblages.

Of course, there is routine “IWC” – “in-water cleaning” of ship hulls and niche areas.  But

The application of IWC will surely be incentivized because of the direct benefits on ship operations, particularly reduced drag and fuel consumption (e.g., Schultz et al. 2011). However, this scenario is unlikely for most vessels given the urgency of evacuating stranded seafarers and restoring shipping movements, and due to limited regional IWC capacity and operational constraints associated with safety and logistics.  (emphasis added)

Turns out niches can be, in the old Multi-Level Perspective, places where BAD SHIT happens, and then comes up and knocks the regime and the seascape around the chops.  Ha ha ha, you read it here first. 

As a result, demand will likely also shift to subsequent ports of call. The capacity of IWC in many recipient ports may also be insufficient to accommodate the anticipated surge in needed services, and cleaning operations may be restricted or prohibited in some jurisdictions, creating additional bottlenecks to mitigate biosecurity risks. Finally, the current trade disruptions and shifting shipping routes are expected to reshape maritime networks and port connectivity, expanding and making less predictable biosecurity risks linked to Gulf vessel traffic.

August 8, 2007 – late great journalist Sharon Begley did a Q&A about climate denialism

The broader context was that the climate issue had exploded back into prominence in 2006 thanks to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, the coming IPCC report, the Stern review, ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, Climate Campers; take your pick. There’s always a bunch of factors for a window to open. There almost, by definition, has to be.

And the denial had sprung back into life as well, funded by outfits like Exxon. See the extraordinary letter in 2006 from the Royal Society. 

What I think we can learn from this – the denialism was spotted as a Major Problem.

The Great Pumpkin, the Fafocene and climate change

In the long-running cartoon strip Peanuts, by Charles Schulz, there was a character, Linus, who was – even more than the others (Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy etc) – a bit of a contradiction.

He was rational, sensible, well-informed and yet, also a believer in “the Great Pumpkin” who would come flying out of the pumpkin patch at Halloween. Repeated cycles of excitement and disappointment could not dissuade him (as per Festinger et al).

Perhaps this is why Linus needed his security blanket – to cope with the contradictions.

I thought of Linus just now, when reading Adam McKay‘s latest essay. McKay, the brains behind “Don’t Look Up,” and script-writer for “The Big Short” talks about lies being like gourds – coming in different shapes and sizes. There is then an extended riff on pumpkins and climate change, and the lies we marinate in.

There’s lots of good stuff and I am not doing it justice, and you should defo read it. (McKay’s bsky here).

There are, of course, other ways to talk about the lies – The Emperor’s New Clothes is one. “Kayfabe” – the word that professional wrestling uses for the agreed hallucination of the ‘narrative’ of heels and faces – is another.

Yesterday I re-upped a post I wrote last year called “Affect and the Fafocene: kayfabe, hypernormalisation and Leonard Cohen“, and someone grabbed the following bit from it when they kindly quote-posted.

We have, in the second half of the twentieth century, under the shadow of the bomb, been able to use astonishing advances in public health (water treatment, inspection of food production), medicine (vaccines and anti-biotics), food production (pesticides, mechanisation, containerisation, etc) and much else to create a world of luxury, convenience and safety for a significant minority of the world’s (expanding) population. Almost by definition if you are reading this you are part of that significant minority. Leisure time, access to education (albeit massified and largely indoctrination, but nonetheless, education), access to information. Clean water coming out of your tap. I mean, wtaf.

All of this seems “normal” if you’ve grown up in it, but it really isn’t. Occasionally reality – in the form of a pandemic – intrudes, but even then, in what is probably one of the last gasps of technological fixery, human ingenuity intervenes and softens the blows.

Meanwhile shifting baseline keeps shifting, the springs get silenter and the oceans warmer.

All this luxury, given names like late capitalism, or the Great Acceleration, or post-modernity (“sociologists invent words that mean… industrial disease“) is based on looting the past (fossil fuels), looting the present (using other humans and animals, and ecosystems as ATMs) and looting the future (deforestation, soil depletion). We are like nothing more than a trustafarian ripping through two or three generations of accumulated wealth on a six month bender after they turn 18 or 21. the kind of bender which ends with them as a corpse with a crusty cocaine facemask in a five star hotel’s penthouse, and a weary detective (Jimmy, or Bunk, or Lester) writing it off as a suicide but knowing it was social murder.

“We” are that trustafarian. After us, not the deluge, but the desert, the boiling unforgiving desert.

What kills me (!) is that it didn’t need to be this way. We could have done better. We didn’t though, and here we are, on that island, it burning to the ground because we were feckless, and without the British Navy officer arriving to save us and chide us at the same time.

Oh well. Welcome to the Fafocene, I hope you enjoy your stay.

August 7, 1977- Arthur Herzog’s “Heat” reviewed

The broader context was was that from the early mid 70s there had been plenty of news stories about carbon dioxide build up, and here we see Arthur Herzog, who had already written The Swarm and Earthsounds, wrote the first full-length cli-fi novel, which is not to say that climate change from carbon dioxide build up had not appeared in various short stories by Isaac Asimov, also in James Blish’s 1969 “We all die naked” and in Ursula Le Guin’s “The Lathe of Heaven.” 

The specific context was that Herzog had already had some successes!

What I think we can learn from this is that it’s now 50 years since the first full-length carbon dioxide specific cli-fi book was published, and here we are.

What happened next Herzog’s novel never got turned into a movie, which is a pity. It would have been a good one, I think.

 Research and see if you can find out more about Hertzog’s process. Keyword search: Hertzog heat genesis. Did he consult Stephen Schneider, etc. Has anyone written about this?

August 6, 1960 – “Earth Warming Up?” asks New York Times

This below is from another paper, off the same newswire – almost certainly the same text.

The broader context was that from 1953 when Gilbert Plass – building on the work of John Tyndall, Svante Arhennius and Guy Callender – had pointed to the build up of carbon dioxide as a factor in warming the earth. There had been semi-frequent discussions in the United States media, and to a much lesser extent in the UK media.

The specific context was that Charles David Keeling had been taking accurate, fanatically accurate in fact, measures of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at Mauna Loa, and also in Antarctica. And it was clear that the carbon dioxide was in fact building up. What was less clear at this point was whether the earth was warming up, because the warming trend that had continued until about 1940 had gone into reverse. At the time this was postulated that this was due to the amount of sulphur dioxide being put into the atmosphere by the extraordinary volumes of coal being burned. What sulphur dioxide does is it whitens clouds, so more sunlight bounces off them before ever hitting the earth, leading to cooling. This is the albedo effect. 

What I think we can learn from this is that if you were reading the New York Times, you were therefore aware that there might be an issue with carbon dioxide. In fact, if you’re reading lots of newspapers, if you’d seen the Bell Telephone documentary Unchained Goddess, none of this was a state secret.

What happened next the New York Times kept reporting, sometimes about things getting cooler, some, but then from the late 60s onwards, pretty consistently about carbon dioxide as a threat. You can make lots of criticisms of the New York Times. I’d stand by those, but then if you think that one source is going to give you the unvarnished truth, then you’re a fool. You need to read widely. But then it becomes a question – who has the money and who has the time? I think we “pick” on establishment newspapers, especially left ones, nominally left, actually liberal ones, as gatekeepers, because we have a broader frustration that we have been unable to build an informed, engaged, and enraged civil society.

August 5, 1980 – carbon dioxide build-up discussed in the South Australian parliament

Forty six years ago, on this day, August 6th, 1980, a South Australian MP shows he knows.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was 338ppm. As of 2026, when this post was published, it is 430ppm. This matters because the more carbon dioxide in the air, the more heat gets trapped. The more heat, the more extreme weather events. You can make it more complicated than that if you want, but really, it’s not. Fwiw, I have a tattoo of the Keeling Curve on my left forearm.

The broader context was that a large deposit of uranium had been discovered in South Australia, and there was debate about whether to start digging it up and exporting it. The Labor government of the day, under Don Dunstan, was somewhat split. The Liberal Party was all for it, and once they took power in 1979, they were banging on about the benefits of Roxby Downs economically, and so forth, and they were also using the argument that only nuclear power could deal with carbon dioxide build up, and that’s what you see here. 

What I think we can learn from this is that awareness of ecological problems is not the preserve of hippies, but ecological problems have various possible solutions, and some of those solutions are extremely technocratic. But we should also be careful about this word “technocratic” as a slur and a swear word, because you have to ask yourself, are vaccines technocratic? Is solar power technocratic? Then, of course, you can slap adjectives on in front of technocratic, but I’m not sure that really always helps so much, but I digress. 

What happened next. Roxby started exporting in 1987.

August 5, 1976 – “It is wise to influence the climate” writes Mikhail Budyko…

On this day 50 years ago, the Post-Courier of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, ran a feature by Russian climatologist Mikhail Budyko about, well, climate change. It had originally been published in the UNESCO Courier.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was 331ppm. As of 2026, when this post was published, it is 430ppm. This matters because the more carbon dioxide in the air, the more heat gets trapped. The more heat, the more extreme weather events. You can make it more complicated than that if you want, but really, it’s not. Fwiw, I have a tattoo of the Keeling Curve on my left forearm.

The broader context was that Russians (including Budyko and Federov had been looking at atmospheric change – deliberate and accidental since the late 1950s.

The specific context was that still, in the mid-1970s it wasn’t clear to everyone if we were going to get hotter (and why) or colder (and why). There were still competing theories around dust etc. 

What I think we can learn from this – the UNESCO Courier was a proper publication. We used to be a smart-ish species. We have idiotified ourselves. Or been idiotified by the most greedy and vicious among us, who find an intelligent populace a threat. 

What happened next. The debates, sadly, continued, long after they needed to. The World Meteorological Organisation proposed and hosted a climate conference in 1979, and in a less suicidal timeline that would have led to actual action on carbon dioxide. Oh well.

August 4, 1977- “Workshop on Anticipated Plant Responses to Global Carbon Dioxide Enrichment”

Forty nine years ago, on this day, August 4th, 1977,

Duke University in Durham, North Carolina on August 4-5, 1977 for “Workshop on Anticipated Plant Responses to Global Carbon Dioxide Enrichment”….  Five years later, on May 23-28, 1982, a similar “International Conference on Rising Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Plant Productivity” was held in Athens, Georgia.

The broader context was that from the mid 70s conferences, especially in the US and Europe, about carbon dioxide build up and the social, economic, biological, military implications it was becoming a known fixture on the circuit, the carousel.

The specific context was that the biologists have been banging on about CO2 build up for a long time. See, for example, 1948 Evelyn Hutchinson at the AAAS, and Lamont Cole in the 60s, and so on and so on.

What I think we can learn from this So this is a point I make regularly; You can’t just look at what the climatologists and meteorologists are saying. You also have to look at the ecologists and biologists, George Woodwell, for example.

What happened next There was another conference in 1980 andSherwood Idso wrote a truly demented article that somehow got published in Science. And this came up in the 1980 hearings, [insert quote from co2 newsletter], and Idso kept on being a nut job denialist, unable to accept that he had been wrong, so just doubled down and kept being wrong (see also Reid Bryson) until he died.

CO2 Newsletter Vol. 2, no.5 – “A 1 degree C warming is generally expected to be reached shortly after the turn of the century if the CO2 buildup continues as in the past”

The 11th edition of the CO2 Newsletter, (Vol. 2, no. 5) published bi-monthly by American geologist William N. Barbat between 1979 and 1982 is live. You can download a pdf and see the full text CO2 Newsletter Vol. 2, no. 5.

The eight page issue has a front page story that is a typical wrist-slasher – “Arctic Warming Resembles the 1930s.”

In his editorial, explaining that he had had dealings with a physicist who seemed not to “get” the basics, Barbat argues that

The goal of the CO2 Newsletter has been to bridge this communications chasm on CO2  between scientists, political leaders and the energy industry without sacrificing too much time from our income-producing business. (We regret the one-month slippage this issue due to the press of business.)

Also of note is the fact that the Geophysics Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton were reading the Newsletter –

Models and Analogs Agree: Warming Makes Wider Dry Belts

The scientific group of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton cite two recent reports of theirs to correct an inaccurate and misleading statement of ours on the editorial page of the previous issue of this newsletter, namely: “If greater warming has resulted in ever widening desert belts (based on studies of all the warm climates of the geologic past), this differs from the model results which infer that continued warming may cause an overall increase in precipitation.”

August 3, 2013- How commentators and the blogosphere treat climate sceptics

Thirteen years ago, on this day, August 3rd, 2013,

Robyn Williams: Did you hear Tom Griffiths the historian on Late Night Live last Tuesday on those who deny climate change? As if it’s a matter of belief.

Tom Griffiths: Yes, isn’t that a very interesting way of undermining understanding of what is a scientific theory. Scientific theory is not a matter of negotiation, it’s not a matter of voting, it’s not a matter of belief. Dissent is only credible if it’s founded on testable evidence and has an alternative holistic theory. And I believe that the IPCC has probably made a mistake in using the word ‘consensus’, which we hear a lot, because consensus sounds like politics, not science. It evokes compromise and negotiation, it suggests somehow the majorities are instrumental and possibly temporary. And it seems to allow space for contrary or dissenting opinions without need for new evidence, that you can have a political stance or an emotional stance or a stance on belief. And sceptics and contrarians will often use those terms about belief, about dissent, about being an agnostic on this issue, as if it is a matter for personal belief.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air was 397ppm. As of 2026, when this post was published, it is 430ppm. This matters because the more carbon dioxide in the air, the more heat gets trapped. The more heat, the more extreme weather events. You can make it more complicated than that if you want, but really, it’s not. Fwiw, I have a tattoo of the Keeling Curve on my left forearm.

The broader context was that climate denial had not gone away, and was continuing to be funded where necessary. But also we should never forget there are just people who have resolutely decided that 19th century physics must be some gigantic conspiracy, and that if a problem involves collective action via states, then it must automatically be a hoax. 

The specific context was that journalists and academics always like to have something to write articles about, because published articles is how you keep score, how you get grants, how you get professorships, how you get corner officers, and PhD students you can bully/steal from, and so forth. 

What I think we can learn from this: sceptics, like the poor, will always be with us

What happened next. Well, the bullshit just keeps on bullshitting, doesn’t it? And the academics keep on scribbling.
